Rubber granules which are mainly produced from new and unused synthetic rubber material, mainly being available in a variety of colours. Some EPDM products are made from recycled material. EPDM is more durable than recycled rubber granules from vehicle tyres. These high-density rubber granules are typically used for the surfacing of children’s play areas, however, they are also commonly used in other industries, being manufactured in a roll to weatherproof roofing, called membrane roofing, as well as into grommets, gaskets, tubing and many other products. The term is more frequently used as an acronym: EPDM.

Artificial material made to look like or represent grass blades within a synthetic carpet. Fibres are short pieces of plastic material, cut from a roll, and can be made from different forms of plastic and have various features. The various characteristics of a fibre are termed the yarn. Also called Synthetic Fibre.

A very sandy rootzone which has been produced by mixing a sand and a screened sandy top-soil with polypropylene strands, to be used as the upper, consolidated, 100mm rootzone layer. It aids surface stability and reduces divoting and is produced by Mansfield Sand.

Turf grown with either Fibresand or Loksand reinforcement materials and seeded with a perennial ryegrass and smooth stalked meadow grass mixture. It is cut to a depth of 40mm in rolls 13-m in length and either 1.25m or 0.74m in width. It is produced by County Turf.

A very sandy rootzone which has been produced by mixing a sand and a screened sandy top-soil with polypropylene and Elastane strands, to be used as the upper, consolidated, 100mm rootzone layer. It aids surface stability and reduces divoting, with a 7,500m² pitch requiring about 1,200 tonnes. It is produced by Mansfield Sand.

The creation of lengths of material, which has its blade width cut lengthwise to form slits and then twisted to form a web-like mesh network, resulting in a more stable surface, however, but are less durable than monofilament strands and more prone to splitting at the tip of the strand. They are said to be designed to split over time, but this is actually a consequence of the manufacturing process and wear which takes place. Fibrillated strands can provide more of a natural grass appearance than monofilament strands.
