Third Generation Pitch (3G)
These were started to be installed in the mid-1990s, with a mostly polyethylene synthetic carpet, and with the pile length typically being 40mm ¯ 65mm. They are primarily used for football and rugby. A 3G carpet might be classified as short-pile (40mm ¯ 55mm); long-pile (56mm-65mm), and extra-long-pile (greater than 65mm).
Tuft
A cluster of fibres which are pulled through a carpet backing material. A certain length will be left on the surface of the backing and then cut to the desired length.
Tuft Bind
The force required to pull out a tuft from a carpet backing. It is also called Tuft Lock which infers the tuft is locked in place until a certain force overcomes the resistance of the fixing.
Tufted
A carpet which has been manufactured through tufting.
Tufting
The process of manufacturing carpets with tufts. The tufts are secured to the backing material through the use of a liquid latex which sets to create a secondary backing.
Unbound Particulate Material
Loose sand, rubber crumb, cork or combinations of these materials.
Unfilled
Urethane
Polyurethane. A polymeric resin applied as an adhesive to the back of a carpet and which covers, protects and strengthens the tuft on the lower side of the carpet backing.
Vacuum
Equipment which removes surface debris by suction created by a motor.
Virgin Plastic
Material that has been manufactured but not yet used or processed for any product.
