These were started to be installed in the mid-1990s, with a mostly polyethylene synthetic carpet, and with the pile length typically being 40mm ¯ 65mm. They are primarily used for football and rugby. A 3G carpet might be classified as short-pile (40mm ¯ 55mm); long-pile (56mm-65mm), and extra-long-pile (greater than 65mm).
