A common Perennial grass, with the scientific name of Schedonorus arundinaceus (previously Festuca arundinacea). The leaf is Flat or rolled (when dry), having a typical width of 3-12mm. The Ligule is Membranous, being 2mm in length; Auricle: Yes, typically with sparse fine hairs, but some ecotypes without. Growth type is Tufted. It is a broader flat leaved fescue grass, with quite firm leaves, which is sometimes used within a mixture with perennial ryegrass. It is a relatively drought tolerant species, so is a useful complement to freer draining winter games pitches, or general lawns.

A perennial ryegrass species which has four sets of chromosomes, in contrast to the usual two sets (which is called diploid). Tetraploid cultivars can typically germinate quicker and also at lower temperatures than diploids, although this may be due to cultivar difference rather than ploidy difference.
