4.2.7 Water
1 This is typically supplied from the mains (potable water, which is expensive) and stored in a water tank. It is then usually applied through sprinklers. It is an important, if not essential, material, especially following the renovation of a pitch.
2 Grass seed will need a regular water supply to help it germinate and develop into an adult plant, whilst a fertiliser needs to be dissolved in water so the relevant foods can be taken up by the grass roots.
3 Relying on rainfall, rather than artificial irrigation, might be acceptable for some regions of the UK that have a regular supply of rain during spring and summer. Even a lower quality pitch will require water at renovation time, so some access to a water supply is essential to increase the likelihood of a successful outcome from a renovation programme.
4 Where rainfall does not occur soon after applying materials, or there is an inadequate amount of rainfall afterwards as well, then there may not be enough time for the grass to fully establish before the start of the next playing season.
