Module 4:

Materials

4.2 What are they used for?

4.2.5 Pesticide: Weedkiller (Herbicide)

1   This is a chemical which is toxic to turf weeds. Where it is used as part of routine maintenance, in contrast to some surface removal work at renovation time, it is often referred to as a selective herbicide.

Different chemicals will control different weeds to a greater or lesser extent, so choose the most suitable herbicide for the actual weeds that are present. Many weeds can be readily controlled with one application of a herbicide.

2   To make the most of a herbicide application it is important to ensure that the grass component of the sward is encouraged by good maintenance practices. This is to increase the chances of the desirable grass/es in competing with and colonising any areas left from the dying and dead weeds following an application.

A Certificate of Competence is needed to apply a herbicide.
