An analysis of the regional flows of specific chemicals or substances and their losses to the environment. The aim being a reduction in the load of the analysed substance being put into the environment.

To keep going; to support; to maintain for a period of time. This word is often seen as the starting point for definitions of sustainable or sustainability, however, these latter two terms have a much deeper and richer meaning which involves varied impacts on the environmental space in which we live and work. In general conversation within the grounds care industry the term sustainable is often incorrectly applied to a pitch or surface which is being sustained with applied maintenance practices.

The ability to maintain a continuous and beneficial condition over a long period of time and typically living within the limits of a natural system. This can either be considered an outcome of a process rather than the process itself, or a sustainable process that is continually achieving sustainability as part of the activities of a process.

An appraisal of the economic, environmental and social effects of a plan from the outset of the preparation process to allow decisions to be made that accord with sustainable development.

A means of, or tool for, assessing the sustainability of a plan, activity or service. Examples may be specific techniques, such as Life Cycle Costing, or processes such as Strategic Environmental Assessment.
