Module 4:

Materials

4.1 What materials might be used?

1 Categorising materials

To try and help you remember the large number and type of materials, we have decided to split them into two categories:

Essential materials: which are commonly used, even for lower quality pitches, and, arguably, might be considered more important than the desirable materials.

Desirable materials: these are still commonly used, but not necessarily all of them, especially where budgets are more limited. Desirable materials are often very dependent on available monies, prevailing weather and ground conditions, pitch construction, as well as the desired pitch quality.

2   You may disagree with this categorisation and the materials which are included within them.

That is fine if you do because it is only an artificial and subjective one that we have created to try and distinguish between those materials that would typically be applied for most pitches and those materials that would more typically be applied to those more intensively maintained and higher quality pitches.

The key point here is that you are now starting to reflect on the relative importance of some materials for your particular pitch.

3 Activity

Categorise the 12 materials and material groups into Essential materials and Desirable materials based on what we have just said about inclusion within the categories.

Use the previous worksheet to indicate which of the material types and groups you consider they might be allocated to. Would you put Essential or Desirable in the second column?

Have a go at this before uncovering our suggested allocation (again in A-to-Z order). Don’t forget these are only our suggestions.

  • Essential materials
  • 1. Fertiliser.
  • 2. Fuel for machinery (Diesel, Petrol, Electricity).
  • 3. Grass seed.
  • 4. Line marking / paint material.
  • 5. Pesticide: Weedkiller (Herbicide).
  • 6. Top-dressing (sand / sandy soil).
  • 7. Water (especially if natural rainfall is inadequate).
  • Desirable materials
  • 8. Biostimulants.
  • 9. Other pesticides - fungicides; insecticides; bio-pesticides.
  • 10. Plant growth regulators (often referred to as PGR).
  • 11. Soil acidifiers / soil conditioners.
  • 12. Wetting agents.

Now we have a list of possible and probable materials it would be helpful to understand a little bit more about each of them.
