Module 1:

What is a football pitch?

1.3.2

Observation exercise 3

Just like the car exercise, don’t spend too long on this, just a few minutes.

Firstly, though look at this picture of a football pitch and try and describe some of its more readily visible features.

Football pitch

Try and identify three of the more visible pitch features in the picture, excluding the players.

This will help you in being able to start describing what is meant by a football pitch.

If you can identify more than three features, then very well done, but don’t worry if you can’t.

What are the features you have identified?

Here is our list, but you may have included other things to what we have put. That’s fine as everyone is probably going to be slightly different.

Careful, purposeful observation and understanding of what is seen is an important skill to have.

You might have identified several of the various features. Here are eight suggestions for what can be seen, although you may have identified other features as well.

  1. Uniform green colour of stripes.
  2. No bare areas.
  3. White lines clearly marked.
  4. Smooth even surface.
  5. Goal post, net, and corner flags: all looking in good order.
  6. No surface water / ponding / puddles / waterlogging present.
  7. The pitch is clear of leaves and debris.
  8. An indication of pitch dimensions: An adult one, so in the region of 100m x 65m, or so.

Hopefully you identified at least 3 features.
