Module 1:

What is a football pitch?

1.1 What is needed from a pitch?

This is a really useful place to start. We want to have an idea of what it is that is to be achieved from our efforts as a groundskeeper.

We can actually split this question into two other questions to provide a better answer. Firstly, a general question and then a more detailed one.

1.1.1

‘What is the main purpose of a football pitch?’

This helps to set the scene at a very general and high level.

Whilst it might be obvious, this can be considered the first start of starting to focus and engage with the course material.

Basically, this is the spark or ignition question that starts the ball rolling.

Why not have a quick guess to this question.

OK. I expect we can all agree on its purpose, so let us keep it simple and say something along the lines of ‘To allow a game of football to be played’. Well, that is its main purpose.

1.1.2

Now the second part of the question which will deal with the expectations from a pitch.

We want to dig deeper now to find out what is expected from a pitch and will start to identify what we want to achieve.

At the moment though this could very well depend on if you are a player, team manager, groundskeeper, spectator or owner.

For now, have a think about the expectations from the use and overall usage use of the pitch.

Jot down some key words that relate to pitch use or usage.

First up then, compare your key words with our suggestions.

You have possibly identified key words or terms such as:

  • playing (a lot of) games,
  • safe,
  • good standard / quality, and
  • no cancellations.

Hopefully you have some similar key words, or maybe even different ones that are just as relevant.
