Module 1:

What is a football pitch?

1.1.3

Now, using some of those key words, try and make one or two sentences that identifies some of the typical use or usage requirements that are needed from a football pitch.

Now compare your sentences with our suggestions.

Your sentences might look something like the following:

  • To play as many games as possible over the year whilst ensuring the pitch is safe at all times and meets the desired quality.
  • To ensure the pitch provides an acceptable playing experience, allowing players to demonstrate their skills, without fear of injury.
  • To play a planned game without fear of cancellation, ensuring it is safe and to provide for a good playing experience.
  • Or something similar or relevant.

This captures a lot of what we need (from a use and usage perspective) from a football pitch.

This is a really good starting place and foundation on which to development further.

So, well done if you have managed to make it to here without taking a sneaky peak     of our suggested key words or sentences before making your own guesses.

If you did take a little peak before your own guesses the that is quite understandable in the early part of a course.

As you work further into the course do try and make guesses before uncovering any suggested answers. This will help you to get the most out of the course and just as importantly it will help you with your learning and longer-term memory recall.

1.1.4

Pitch details

Having considered some of the needs of a pitch in relation to usage requirements we can now start to think a bit more about the surface.

In general terms we want to think about being able to describe why having an understanding of the details (these can be called performance standards, which we cover in Module 2) of a pitch surface is useful to a groundskeeper.

This links right back to the starting questions where we mentioned about the purpose of and expectations from a football pitch.
