Module 1:

What is a football pitch?

1.2.4

Observation: Hidden, or less visible, features

This is all a very good start. However, if we think about this a bit more then there is a lot more information that can be used to help describe a car, and the same goes for a football pitch, which we will look at later.

There is a lot more beneath the surface, or in the case of a car beneath the bonnet and inside the car, than what can be readily seen on first looks.

Besides the outside features that you noted, you may have also started to think about the inside features and how the car might perform on the road.

If you now look at this other picture, and if you haven’t already started to do so, think about some of the features that might be considered for its performance and interior as well.

1.2.5

Observation exercise 2

Try and make a note of at least another 6 other features that could be used to describe the car in even more detail than you did previously.

BMW car interior

Hopefully this interior view has helped you to start to consider some more features that might be used to describe a car.

We can expand into some of the more technical details, such as

  • fuel range,
  • charging time (for electric powered vehicles),
  • kilometres or miles per litre,
  • heated seats (?),
  • entertainment system,
  • dashboard features: temperature gauge, speedometer, rev counter, fuel gauge,
  • automatic gears,
  • hand or electronic switch for brake,
  • window controls on right hand arm rest,
  • satnav,
  • adjuster for steering wheel position,
  • and many more.

Hopefully you identified at least 6 different features.

Basically, the description, as it develops, is building up a very detailed picture of a particular type of car.

As more details are added to the description, this will eventually lead to a situation whereby the possibilities of the actual type of car will become narrower and narrower, until there is likely to be just one possibility of the specific car being described.

We are not looking at that level of detail here (i.e. to be able to identify a specific model of car), but the concept and process is the same for describing a football pitch.

Now that we have considered a range of features for a motor vehicle, we can now look at how you would describe a football pitch, in particular what is meant by a desirable football pitch.
