Sprinkler
An item of equipment for applying water to an area. There are two main types of sprinkler available: Portable or Permanent.
Squaring Up
The action of checking an area or pitch markings to ensure that correct right angles have been used at corners, otherwise a misaligned area or pitch will be produced.
Strimming
The action of cutting vegetation, especially relatively long grass, with the use of a strimmer / trimmer.
Strip Sodding
An intermediate method of sward establishment. A narrow strip of turf, about 75mm to 150mm in width, is laid at spacings of 300mm to 600mm. The bare area in between the turves is gradually colonised by the rhizomes or stolons of the grass used in the turf strip. This is typically carried out using the warm season Zoysia grass. Complete sward coverage can, however, be relatively slow.
Striping
An attractive visual appearance of a turfgrass surface that has resulted from a turf maintenance activity, especially mowing or drag brushing. An area which has been created in relatively narrow stripes due to working up and down in immediately adjacent strips.
Sub-Compact Tractor
These are smaller and lighter units than compact tractors and would mainly be used as power units, with or without a cab, for single mowing decks, having a maximum power rating of about 25hp, with many being 16-20hp. Additional attachments are available, including front loader buckets, for some types of sub-compact tractor and so their capabilities can be similar to that of some compact tractors, although for most turf equipment attachments a minimum of 25hp would probably be desired to ensure the unit is not overloaded. Basically, this type of tractor is just suited to light weight routine wo

Swath
The spray width from a boom sprayer or lance on a knapsack sprayer.
Thatch Control
Addressing the causes of thatch will help to prevent and reduce its build-up. Key activities that are required include:
• scarification, supported by verticutting where possible,
• regular aeration,
• controlled irrigation as it is relatively easy to overwater for the needs of a grass plant,
• appropriate Nitrogen applications,
• the addition of micro-organisms to help aerate the soil and reduce thatch content,
• correct mowing practices which encourage desirable grasses rather than annual meadow grass,
• assess the soil and sward conditions to mak

Three-Point Linkage
A means of attaching implements to a tractor using three points of connection, in an ‘A' shape. There are two lower arms, for lifting and lowering and are controlled by the tractor's hydraulic system; and a top bar called the ‘top-link' which provides stability to the attached equipment.
