A theory of learning which focuses on understanding how learning takes place, essentially how meaning is created, through direct (active) experiences, in the environment it occurs (contextualised), and building on prior knowledge.

The ability to be able to recall knowledge from memory is an important aspect of this theory, allowing learners to construct their own knowledge.

Bruner [1] & [2], Piaget, Vygotsky and others all influenced this theory.
