The eleventh golden rule of Biological Control was added in 2021 by the Amenity Forum to the original ten, making the 11 Golden Rules.

The action of reducing something, especially used in terms of pollution abatement. The abatement activity may not just result in the reduction of a pollutant, for example a pesticide or CO2 emissions, but may also result in its elimination.

A shortened version of a word or term. Where a term is shortened to the initials of each word, for example the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health regulations is often shortened to COSHH. Whilst this is also an acronym, because it can be easily spoken as a word is often referred to as an abbreviation.

An adjustment made in a company’s end of, accounting, year financial statement. This occurs when either a purchase has been made but not yet paid for, so it is a financial liability as they are accounts payable, which is an accrued expense, or if income has been earned, for example from the sale of a product, but payment not received as this might be awaiting payment by invoice and these are accounts receivable, which is an accrued revenue.

A name for a word that is formed from the initial letters of a term, for example the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health regulations is often shortened to COSHH. Where the word is easily spoken, as in COSHH, it is often referred to as an abbreviation, in contrast to another word which is formed from a term which is clearly not easily spoken as a word and the individual letters themselves are spoken, for example EPDM which is an acronym of Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer.

A level at which some form of pro-active control is expected to be taken to control levels of pests, disease, or weeds within the Integrated Pest Management system. Incidences of weeds, pests and diseases below the action threshold are deemed to be acceptable to the manager and no particular activity will be required in controlling low levels of weed, pest, or disease. For example, an action threshold for earthworm casts might be 15 per square metre for a general quality football pitch. Any greater than this number and additional maintenance activities will be needed to specifically address the issue.

Undertaking something that was not originally planned for or is outside of a normal routine. An ad hoc activity will be carried out to address a specific issue, for example, an ad hoc grounds maintenance task might be the repair of a small area of damaged turf surface prior to commencing or continuing with a planned maintenance activity, such as mowing. An experienced and qualified grounds person will typically be able to adapt to unforeseen issues and address them in an ad hoc way, however, where the same or similar issues keep arising then these would be incorporated into a planned schedule.

A course of action, option or guidance which has been recommended by someone else, especially in an official capacity but it could also be as part of a code of practice, a consultancy report, a committee, an organisation, or a warning, especially of an adverse event that might happen, such as a severe weather warning. Something which is advisory does not have to be followed, as it is not usually legally enforceable (otherwise it would be mandatory) but it should be carefully considered as it will typically identify a desirable (or least worst) outcome.
