A weighted hammer (0.5kg or 2.25kg) to which an electronic device which measures gravities (g) is connected. It is used to measure the hardness of surfaces. For golf greens guideline readings (STRI Firmness scale, using a 0.5kg weight) are: < 60 = Hard and receptive; 60 to 70 = Soft; 70 to 80 = Receptive; 80 to 100 = Firm; 100 to 130 = very fFirm.

A tool used to determine, along with the use of a measure, the evenness of a surface. It might be a specially manufactured 3-m length of aluminium or an improvised tool, such as a large spirit level.
