Clegg Hammer
A weighted hammer (0.5kg or 2.25kg) to which an electronic device which measures gravities (g) is connected. It is used to measure the hardness of surfaces. For golf greens guideline readings (STRI Firmness scale, using a 0.5kg weight) are:
< 60 = Hard and receptive;
60 to 70 = Soft;
70 to 80 = Receptive;
80 to 100 = Firm;
100 to 130 = very fFirm.
Infill Thickness Tester
A handheld item of equipment, with three metal prongs, that is used to test the depth of infill material in a synthetic carpet. It is manufactured by Redexim.
Penetrometer
A hand tool which is used to provide an indication of the firmness, softness to hardness, of a ground.
Stimpmeter
A hand tool, being a V shaped narrow bar (36 inches in length and 1.75 inches wide) used to measure the speed of golf greens; (See ‘Green Speed').
Straight Edge
A tool used to determine, along with the use of a measure, the evenness of a surface. It might be a specially manufactured 3-m length of aluminium or an improvised tool, such as a large spirit level.
