Football Pitch Soil conditioners
These are materials that have an effect on and change the condition of the soil. There may be a requirement to raise or lower the soil pH to help provide a soil that is more suitable for the desirable turfgrass species and less desirable to undesirable grasses such as annual meadow grass.
Some soil conditioners supply nutrients and organic substances to the soil but can also have a secondary side effect, which might for example, contribute to the reduction of earthworms and their casting.
As with the use of many materials, it is important to determine if they are really needed for a specific pitch, and to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the application.
In particular, weigh up the impact the soil conditioner might have on playing quality (and the benefits or limitations of improving this feature) and whether there is a likely change in the usage carrying capacity of the pitch.
If there are justifiable benefits and gains, and budgets permit, then this will be a strong case for using a soil conditioner.
