Employee Well-being
A Social Sustainability Indicator.
• Brief Description: A mostly qualitative measure that looks at how well an organisation supports the well-being of an employee. This indicator can be representative of an organisation’s caring features for its employees. A range of indicators might be considered to create this overall indicator, including:
o Type / extent / frequency of well-being reviews.
o Ability to raise well-being concerns.
o Perception by employees of how seriously management staff take well-being concerns.
o ‘Family friendly’ policies in place, clarity of understanding of policies, and whether they are applied appropriately.
o Adequate organisational support systems in place to support well-being needs: this might be to reduce excessive workloads, address stressful work situations or employee feeling of loneliness, the provision of help lines, addressing concerns about workplace health and safety, ensuring impartial financial advice is available, providing designated emotional support staff.
Relevance to sustainability: The focus of this indicator is to provide support, which might be active or passive, to employees in both their work and home life, as the latter can affect work productivity and relationships.
