This is where a learner takes ownership and responsibility for their learning. It is an individualised approach, but with the help of a facilitator (e.g. tutor) to support them in creating their own learning plan.

This type of approach is arguably more suited to someone who is already motivated to learn and has a range of well-developed personal skills.

These skills could also be developed as part of the autonomous learning approach, although in the initial stages the involvement of a teacher or tutor would be high so as to help develop an individual’s confidence in being autonomous, and whether this approach is well suited to the particular individual.
