Bowling Green Brushing & Switching
Brushing and switching are important regular, but simple, tasks which are used to keep the surface free of dew and also for knocking over any worm casts which might be present.
A drag brush is also helpful in keeping the grass blades upright and to help maintain suitable air flow around the blades during the time of year when mowing is reduced to a minimum. Wide, but shallow, dew brushes (2 – 3 metres wide) instead of drag brushes can be used to speedily remove dew from a green – these are held out in front of an operator and are also lighter and quicker to use than drag brushes.
The use of a drag brush prior to mowing will help to ensure a cleaner cut is achieved and helps to contribute to maintaining a surface with more upright leaves, rather than lateral spreading leaves.
Switching should be considered an important activity prior to mowing, especially as it can detect fine gravel, stones, metal or hard objects which can be difficult to see by eye yet could cause damage to the bottom blade or cylinder.
