Bowling Green FAQ 17: We have a fine leaved grass like weed on the green. What do you think it is?
There are not many weeds which have fin leaf like a grass plant, so in practice it is most likely Procumbent Pearlwort, which is a very fine leaved, low growing weed and which can have very small have small white dot sized flower petals, with green outer leaves (sepals) anytime from May to September during flowering.
Other possibilities, but being less likely though are as follows:
• A relatively broad leaf, when compared to fescues and bent grasses, which might be more prominent during the early part of the season, having fine silvery hairs is Field Woodrush.
• If the leaf (actually a stem) is thin, rigid, very upright, dark green and growing in clusters, being especially noticeable during more prolonged wet periods, then it is likely to be Toad Rush.
• If the green is on the coast, and the grass like weed is smooth, with a thick (some may say succulent type), in contrast to thin grass, leaf, often greyish green in colour, which grows in a rosette pattern, then it is most likely Sea Plantain.
