There are two main different layouts for the lateral drainage pipes for a bowling green, either diagonal or perpendicular. Pipe spacing varies according to the soil texture of the sub-soil as well as the depth of rootzone, but with most greens built from the 1970s onwards having 125 – 200mm depth of rootzone, a spacing of 4.5m to 5.5m might be typical, but there can be differences greater or less than these spacings in practice.

The two approaches to diagonal layout will either see the main central lateral drainage pipe be connected to the perimeter pipe at the corner of the green, whilst another approach is to have a lateral off centre. The two approaches are shown in the following site plans for a flat rink bowling green.
