Regenerating Perennial Ryegrass

This is a specially bred sub-species of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L. subsp. stoloniferum) that produces what are called ‘determinate’ stolons, with the grass often being referred to as RPR. Stolons can be classified into two types: determinate- and indeterminate-stolons: They are both above ground horizontal growing stems which root at the nodes (which is what a stolon is) but with slight differences as follows:
• A determinate-stolon does not produce an abundance of consecutive progressive shoots, but the apical apex will eventually terminate with an inflorescence.
• An indeterminate-stolon continues to produce shoots from its nodes in a progressive and continuous way. The apical apex (end) of the horizontal stem doesn’t terminate with an inflorescence, but remains vegetative, as in creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera).
