This is the law of the land made by Parliament in England, an Act of Parliament, or other Government legislatures, in the UK. Legislation might be for regulation purposes, such as managing or restricting the use of a substance, to ban something, to permit something to take place. Probably the most well-known piece of legislation is that of The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. This term is also known as Statutory Law.

Some of the other key features of legislation include:
• The process which initiates the legislation, which can include public consultation, expert feedback, and parliamentary debate, amendments being made to initial proposals, and then voting on to determine if it is to be enacted in law.
• Interpretation and enforcement of new legislation will be guided by precedent, legal debate, as well as through the provision of codes of practice, whether approved or not.

Legislation provides an important foundation for society, helping to regulate behaviour and manage expectations from Government, their departments and agencies responsible for compliance and enforcement.
