Teamwork, Understanding the needs of others to support
Having an understanding of the needs of other team members can help in the way messages are communicated within the team, with some approaches being more appropriate and effective than others, so find what works best for different individuals. Encouraging an atmosphere of communicating openly about challenges which an individual might be facing with their workload or a specific task makes it easier for others to provide relevant guidance and support.
This can also lead to a more open and collaborative approach to teamwork, improve working relationships as individuals are better understood and will typically feel that they are integral part of the team. Encouraging collaborative teamwork will also help to break down barriers an individual might feel exists in being able to express any difficulties they might be encountering. In addition, relevant communication methods can also increase the likelihood of the sharing of ideas, such as improved working practices, amongst a team.
Having an understanding of the strengths and limitations of individuals can help make the most of available resources, improving efficiency, but also building on the interests of an individual where practicable and ensure that tasks are shared equitably. Whilst a manager can build on the strengths of individuals, they will also identify which areas can be enhanced with continual development, aiming to build the confidence and capability of individuals further.
Providing recognition of efforts and achievements, along with positive feedback, can often be a relatively simple way of supporting others, yet those on the receiving end of this may actually consider this as being the main type of support they require.
Active monitoring of the progress of individuals who are needing particular support in overcoming any difficulties is important because changing the type of support may be needed to ensure they stay on track to achieve a successful outcome.
Getting to know the needs of others can encourage empathy and helpfulness within a workplace, increasing mutual respect and creating a more positive environment which aids the motivation of individuals. Offering emotional support to others, if required, can often help individuals make the first move in asking for support in addressing work or personal issues.
Providing relevant training as well as resources to do a good job are two key factors in supporting others. This can help drive engagement and motivation, improve outcomes and also provides the necessary skills and knowledge needed to overcome workplace challenges.
A good performing team will have a good understanding of how to make others feel valued, contributing to a positive work ethic and ideally a more successful team and organisation.
