The EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) 2000 is a key piece of European Union legislation which is implemented in the UK through Regulations (and Amendments), including
• The Water Environment (Water Framework Directive) (England and Wales) Regulations 2017.
• The Water Environment (Controlled Activities) (Scotland) Regulations 2011.
• The Water Environment (Water Framework Directive) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2003.

The WFD focuses on protecting and improving the quality and quantity of available water resources across Europe. The directive sets out a comprehensive framework for the sustainable management of inland surface water bodies, including rivers and lakes, as well as coastal waters, and groundwater.

The Directive promotes an integrated approach to water management, taking into account the interconnectedness of ecosystems, the setting of quality standards to promote healthier and more sustainable water resources, requires stakeholder participation to improve public understanding of water management, and adopts a river basin approach to encourage greater cooperation between neighbouring countries to promote more equitable sharing and security of managed resources.
