Professional Discussion
A two-way discussion. Within a workplace or seminar situation this might involve an expert, or similar, discussing questions or scenarios with work colleagues or attendees.
It would involve routine exchange between the involved parties as the discussion develops and would not be just a question-and-answer session.
The sharing of ideas and best practice within a group situation can help in promoting learning, but also in engaging participants and acting as a catalyst for collaboration, which can be seen as a motivator for change and innovation.
In an examination or assessment situation this would be between one or more assessors or examiners and a candidate to determine the depth of understanding of the candidate. The discussion, which would be a formal and documented conversation, would be led by the candidate who will be developing topics for discussion, with direction from the assessor or examiner. Considerable interaction would take place between the different parties, with full opportunity being given to the candidate to listen actively, be pro-active and to demonstrate insight into the subject matter, aiming to satisfy the required outcomes of the assessment.
Professional discussions can be a component element of a performance appraisal, providing an opportunity for an in-depth discussion and exploration to take place.
Where workplace situations have become untenable, or similar, then the use of a professional discussion might be able to resolve conflicts, disagreements or misunderstanding between parties. If honesty, trust, openness, and confidentiality are integral to the professional discussion then a successful resolution, or at least a signposting to an appropriate outcome, if subsequently enacted and followed, can often result from the professional discussion. This activity can help to identify and explore the differing concerns and perspectives of the parties involved and through improved communication may help to diffuse the situation.
Solving technical problems, especially complex or vague ones, can often be well suited to a professional discussion, with the exploration of ideas and potential solutions often helps to reduce the complexity of, or offer clarity to, a problem.
