An item of equipment which is used to lightly raise up grass leaves; In effect it is carrying out a mechanical combing of the grass surface. The equipment might be a powered rotating disc with fine tines, or a nylon brush, fitted behind the front roller, which might be grooved, of a cylinder mower. A similar type of activity is combing.

A powered groomer, in particular, can help to encourage sward thickening and can increase the speed of a bowling or golf green without the need to cut too low. A well-groomed surface that has a height of cut at 4.5-5mm can be a similar speed to a green cut at around 3.5-4mm but will also be more resilient in adapting to stressful weather conditions and wear from usage, being able to maintain a good playing surface for longer periods.

A correctly used groomer, along with suitable mowing heights, provides a greenkeeper and players with additional insurance and leeway to cope with unforeseen adverse weather conditions.
