The number of greenkeepers required to manage a golf course in line with the above requirements (excluding other areas where figures haven’t been indicated, e.g. deep rough, etc.) will, using the following assumptions, be in the region of 5 to 7, excluding the Course Manager; the amount of time available for this person to assist with greenkeeping tasks will vary depending upon exact job responsibilities. Courses with elite expectations and high inputs will have a greater number of greenkeepers available to maintain to the expected very high standards.
40 hours per week x 52 weeks = 2,080 hours, minus
• Average annual leave: 5 weeks x 40 = 200 hours.
• Public holidays: 8 days x 8 = 64 hours.
• Average sick leave = 2 weeks x 40 = 80 hours.
• • = 344 hours.
• Less ‘unproductive’ hours per week: meetings, tool-box talks, talking to customers, phone calls, emails, training, cleaning sheds, additional times for cleaning equipment not included already, walking between jobs / tasks, etc: 25%? of gross time: 2,080 – 344 = 1,736 less 25% (i.e. 434) = 1,302 hours available for ‘productive’ work.
• 5,962.5 ÷ 1,302 = 4.6 staff; to 8,699.5 ÷ 1,302 = 6.7 staff.
For a premium-elite type golf course, where excellence is essential at all times, then the number of greenkeeping staff for each 18-hole golf course might be 13, increasing to 15 during the April to September.
