The total quantity of materials that might be needed to maintain a golf course can vary considerably due to a number of factors, including:

• The size of the areas being maintained.

• The type of construction for the greens, tees and fairways.

• The soil type for the fairways, in particular.

• The size and number of sand bunkers present on the course.

• The available budget. This may be the current budget or a future available budget which may be enhanced from an existing one due to more funds becoming available.

• The desired standard of the surfaces; a higher standard of golf green and course will typically require greater material inputs, but this isn’t always the case.

• The predominant grass species around the course.

• The geographic location of the course. There is a longer growing season in the south as compared with the north of the country.

• The different micro-climates on the course can provide a variance to the actual maintenance requirements for each hole.

• How wet-dry, warm-cold the weather has been in any prevailing year.

• The amount of use which occurs on the course, and whether excessive use is experienced as well as the usage patterns which occur.

• The current condition of the course. Additional materials may be needed for improvements to get the course up to a suitable standard.
