Drag brushing can be a useful maintenance activity, especially during low to no growth periods when the mower is not being used.

The drag brush can help produce a well-presented pitch without the need for a machine to be used on soil conditions that would cause compaction.

Drag brushes mounted on power units are significantly quicker than hand pulled ones, but no compaction or soil smearing will be caused by hand and this can significantly impact on reducing surface water retention, with the potential to reduce match cancellations during the wetter winter months.

A typical time for hand-drag brushing a pitch might be 1.5 to 2.25 hours, depending on the width of brush, length of grass and walking speed in particular. Whilst this is quite a long time, there can be occasions during the wetter winter period when ground conditions are totally unsuitable to use a tractor operated combination drag brush and using a pedestrian hand drag brush will be appropriate.
