An early ride on golf green triple mower produced in the early 1970s by Toro. The marketing at the time emphasized, amongst other features, the efficiency benefits of a triple mower over pedestrian mowers, with 18 greens being cut 3 times per week in 10 hours total, whilst a pedestrian mower might take 36 hours (or 3 persons 12 hours each). An interesting aspect of the marketing was that greens might routinely be mown on 3 occasions per week during the main growing periods and this frequency is supported by the guidance given by the Director of the STRI, Escritt, J.R. (1978), ‘A B C of Turf Culture’, Kaye & Ward, p98. The quality of golf surfaces was very good in the 1970s and this is still the case, although the contrast in frequency is that greens are now typically mown on 4 to 7 times per week. One question which springs to mind is that of ‘Are greens, on the whole, being cut too often for what is actually required ‘?
