Fertiliser Choice

Choosing a fertiliser involves more than just picking up a lawn / turf fertiliser that might be in a store and then applying it to a grass surface. Consider a number of factors that might influence the choice of fertiliser for a particular turfgrass surface.
Firstly, consider what is the purpose for applying the fertiliser, so reflect on what it is needed for: See Fertiliser Purpose.
Other factors include:
• The cost: This will limit what might be available for someone to purchase.
• What type of spreader or applicator is available? There is not much point buying a liquid fertiliser if the only applicator is a drop spreader or bucket for hand spreading.
• What is the formulation required? Liquid, granular, powder, etc.
• How much of a quick response is required, or will a slower response be required?
• What is the potential for scorching the leaf, as this is influenced by irrigation availability?
• What analysis is needed and does the fertiliser meet these requirements?
• What is the manufacturer’s recommended application rates?
• Is the soil pH, or surface layer, wanting to be changed or not?
• How soluble is the fertiliser and what is its leaching potential, especially on sandy soils which are located near to watercourses?
• Are there any specific storage or application requirements?
