A rotating shaft which is connected by a crank pin to a connecting rod and piston in an internal combustion engine. The part of the crank pin which connects to the connecting rod is called the big end, whilst the part of the connecting rod which connects to the piston is called the small end. The crankshaft converts the up and down action of the pistons into rotary motion to power the drive shaft to which wheels are ultimately connected.
