The ability to understand your own and others’ emotions and how to best engage with others depending upon their behaviour at the time. It is being able to empathise with others, build rapport, and promote positive and constructive actions and behaviours from others and self.

The ability to understand and influence your own well-being, as well as that of others is another aspect of emotional intelligence. It can be argued that this is the major trait of humans and is the main contributor to effective social awareness and understanding, helping to build friendships and good working relationships.

Motivation and the understanding of self-motivation and what motivates others can be considered a sub-category of emotional intelligence. Understanding potential barriers to communication and engagement and how these can be overcome can contribute towards a focus on applying motivational techniques for the benefit of self and others.
