The Regulatory Authority in England, Ofqual, previously (2010) provided a definition of occupational qualifications as, "A qualification that introduces the skills and capabilities needed for a particular occupation or job within a sector. The skills of an occupational course are developed to an industry standard and to a level of competence needed to use them in a workplace.”

The difference between the terms occupational and vocational is that vocational covers a more general area of work, whilst occupational is a more specific area of work, as indicated below:
