Workplace Exposure Limit

A term defined by the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (Amendment) Regulations 2004 (in Section 2(a)(v)) with it meaning “… the exposure limit approved by the Health and Safety Commission for that substance in relation to the specified reference period when calculated by a method approved by the Health and Safety Commission, as contained in HSE publication “EH/40 Workplace Exposure Limits 2005” as updated from time to time.”
“WELs are British occupational exposure limits and are set in order to help protect the health of workers. WELS are concentrations of hazardous substances in the air, averaged over a specified period of time, referred to as a time-weighted average (TWA).” (Source: EH40/2005 Workplace exposure limits, HSE, p.6, https://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/books/eh40.htm, accessed 10th June 2022)
This term superseded the previous COSHH terms of maximum exposure limit and occupational exposure standard.
