Understanding how thought processes can be influenced by internal and external factors.

This can, in particular, be an individual's behaviour (cognitive behavioural theory) and how this can impact on their motivation to learn, and the context (social cognitive theory) in which learning takes place, in particular the environment and social interactions.

Questioning and challenging ideas, reflection, discussion, problem solving are all techniques to aid cognitive learning. See Cognitivism.
