A plant that lives for more than two years. There are woody perennial and herbaceous perennials.

Woody perennial
These are trees and shrubs that have persistent vegetation that is above ground. Woody perennials can be either deciduous or evergreen. Examples include:
Evergreen
• Holm Oak (Quercus ilex).
• Viburnum tinus.
Deciduous
• Spiraea japonica.
• Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna).

Herbaceous perennials
These plants often have their vegetation die down and over winter as an underground organ, such as a bulb, corm, rhizome or tuber, with examples including:
• Perennial Phlox (Phlox maculata).
• Gladiolus species.
• Snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis).
• Daffodil (Narcissus species).

This group is also the category for turf grasses and turf weeds, although for grasses and many weeds their vegetative leaves will persist on the surface over the winter period, otherwise many sports surfaces would not be able to be maintained as they would be bare of grasses.
