A type of assessment question, which might be used in a written examination, in which the answer to a question is expected to be of sentence to a single paragraph, or possibly a couple of paragraphs in length in some cases.

The answer might be to provide a description, definition, short explanation or complete missing words within a text; The learner may also be expected to create a labelled diagram.

Typically, the required answer will in response to a specific statement or issue, without the need to provide comparisons and contrasts or offer deeper insight into the question posed, as this will require more of a long answer question response.

This term is also frequently shortened to the acronym SAQ.
