The theory and practice of learning for adult learners, which will often follow a well-structured approach to a course.

Self-directed learning is often the focus for adult learning, with a teacher helping to support a learner in building their own confidence in learning and taking control of their learning.

A learner will aim to become competent in their learning, but the emphasis is on where a routine has been followed, in contrast to Heutagogy, where the learner is able to apply their skills and knowledge more readily to new experiences and therefore develop their capability.

This type of learning will often differ from a child centred approach to learning due to an adult's life experience, a more mature approach, a greater desire to learn job skills to gain and maintain employment status, often more focused learning for a specific requirement to be met in the present rather than in the future, and an intrinsic desire to learn.

The process of continuous lifelong learning is often the focus of applied andragogy.
