Determining an accurate estimate of the time it takes to carry out a maintenance activity significantly helps a manager to understand if available resources can meet work requirements and outcomes. For example, there is little point having an expectation of a high quality surface if the available resources can only achieve a basic quality. A realistic assessment needs to take place and then an informed decision can be made as to how best to deploy those resources, identify realistic expectations for the available resources and also to justify increasing resources where different, especially higher, expectations are desired.

Work study can help to provide objective data from which to create a work programme, however, this can be a time-consuming activity which can be disproportionately expensive for small teams. Building up your own estimated timings does not have to be an onerous task and can be achieved fairly easily but is probably best approached as an ongoing process with adjustments made for new machinery which might be purchased, staff changes, and to fine tune previous estimated timings.
