Safe System of Work
Embedded in the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 is the duty of an employer to an employee for “the provision and maintenance of plant and systems of work that are, so far as is reasonably practicable, safe and without risks to health;†(Section 2 (2)(a)). It involves an employer having formal procedures, including risk assessments, to ensure all activities can be undertaken safely with necessary controls put in place. Employees will have well described safe working practices (including safe working method statements) for tasks and will be trained in the implementation of these. A positive attitude and behaviour will form part of a good safety culture within an organisation, looking after the best interests of all workers.
