A liquid and granular material acting as a soil conditioner. It is identified as a ‘Horticultural fertiliser’ and ‘For use only as a horticultural soil conditioner’, with the active ingredient being Saponin.

The organic material has a nutrient content of N:P2O5:K2O of 1.10 : 0.26 : 0.94; with Magnesium of 0.02%, and a pH of 5.7. (MSDS sheet (2021), which also states also states “12.6 Other adverse effects: Product may cause some irritation to organisms living in soil. The substance is hazardous to the aquatic environment.”). The recommended application rate for the granular product (being supplied in 20kg bags) is 30gm/m2 (300 kg /ha), with a recommendation to water the product in for some 5‐10 minutes, with the purpose being “… to wash the micro fine plant extracts into the turf and start the breakdown process.” (Purity info sheet). The liquid product has an application rate 80L/ha being mixed in with 500-600L of water; a 10L container is sufficient for about 1250m2.

With the very low nutrient content it is surprising if this is considered within anyone’s nutritional programme as the nutrient unit costs will be extremely high compared with the normal wide range of fertilisers supplied by the industry and so wouldn’t be purchased for this reason. Its primary use would be that of a soil conditioner, although with saponin products having a pesticidal property that can reduce earthworm activity, there is a possibility that the product might be primarily purchased for this reason. However, at the current time (November, 2024) it is not approved as a plant protection product / pesticide in the UK (https://secure.pesticides.gov.uk/pestreg/ProdSearch.asp), so this would be an illegal use of the product for that specific purpose. If, however, it is approved for such use in the future then it will be a legal option for earthworm control. It is part of the Velvit brand of products and is produced by GreenBest Ltd.
