Perennial Ryegrass

A common Perennial grass, with the scientific name of Lolium perenne. It is a hard wearing ubiquitous turfgrass which is used on many different sports and amenity surfaces. The leaf is Flat or rolled, having a typical width of 2-6mm. The Ligule is Membranous, being 2mm in length; Auricle?: Yes, although this can be poorly developed in young leaves and difficult to distinguish. Growth type is Tufted.
The top surface of the leaf is ribbed and dull green, whilst the lower surface is shiny with a prominent mid-rib. The basal is often red to purple in colour.
