Italian Ryegrass

A common Annual grass, with the scientific name of Lolium multiflorum. The leaf is Flat or rolled, having a typical width of 10mm. The Ligule is Membranous, being 1-2mm in length; Auricle?: Yes. Growth type is Tufted. It is typically sown for agricultural purposes as a forage grass but not as a routine turfgrass in the UK. It can be used as a nurse crop or for winter overseeding of some Bermuda grass surfaces in the warmer climates of the USA but wasn't used for high quality surfaces, although grass breeding has produced cultivars which can now be sown at low temperatures for use within some sports turf situations over the autumn and winter period. It is also called Annual Ryegrass.
