A material is considered inert when it does not provide any chemical benefit or influence on its surroundings. Sand is often considered an inert material, yet it can typically contain a significant quantity of many essential plant nutrients, being able to supply most or all of required quantities of several micro-nutrients (e.g. Iron, Copper) and also significant quantities of some macro-nutrients (e.g. Calcium, Magnesium).
