1. A fine sea washed turf of mainly slender creeping red fescue and creeping bent which was originally cut from the coastal area of the town of Silloth on the Solway Firth in Cumbria. It was traditionally used on bowling greens until better turf was obtained by improved commercial growing from the 1970s onward.
2. A general term which is sometimes used for any sea washed turf, irrespective of where it was grown.
