A common Perennial grass, with the scientific name of Festuca rubra ssp commutata; although it is sometimes classified as Festuca nigrescens. The leaf is Bristle, having a typical width of 0.6-1mm. The Ligule is Membranous, being 0.5mm in length; Auricle?: No. Growth type is Tufted. It is used in fine turf and low maintenance situations. The minimum effective cutting height for this species is 5mm, with it growing well in infertile and dry conditions, which helps to maintain its presence when in such conditions where it has been sown with the otherwise (when in moisture and more fertile situations) more aggressive Browntop Bent species.
