Often used to refer to an indentation made in the surface of a golf green by the impact of a golf ball hitting the green and where it typically has not been repaired by the golfer who hit the shot.

It can also refer to any marks besides an indentation, such as a bruise on the grass leaves to scuff marks and as another name for a divot, on a surface resulting from the interaction of any ball (cricket and tennis due to their size, but less likely a football or rugby ball). Where a mark has been made by a bowling ball, then this would be referred to as a bowl or bowls mark.
